VIA will be adding as many as 20 additional parking spaces to better serve passengers using the station, including the more than 50 commuters who travel with VIA between Port Hope and the Greater Toronto Area on a frequent basis. In addition to the extra parking, VIA will also be repaving the rail crossing to the east of the station. Work on this project is expected to begin this fall and should be completed before winter.

The work at Port Hope station complements the recently announced funding for a new and expanded station in Cobourg. The new station in Cobourg, worth as much as $ 7 million, is necessary in order to accommodate the steadily increasing ridership in the region. VIA predicts that ridership will continue to expand and outgrow the current station within the next two years. Additionally, the station alterations and expansions that would be required in order to accommodate the addition of a second passenger platform cannot be carried out at the current station, which is protected by the Heritage Railway Stations Protection Act.

The new Cobourg station, new parking spaces in Port Hope and surrounding infrastructure improvements will better serve the region and its increasing number of passengers. VIA remains committed to preserving the current Cobourg station and will continue to work with the town to ensure that the building plays a meaningful role in the community for many years to come.
