New USA Rail Pass Available

10/29/2008 AT 07:26

The USA Rail Pass is an excellent way to see the United States and enables travelers to visit any destination in Amtrak's system, choosing how long they wish to travel at a fixed price, thus providing a reduction in the total cost of separately purchased multiple tickets.

USA Rail Passes are available in three levels of travel durations and travel segments: 8 segments of travel within 15 days for $389; 12 segments of travel within 30 days for $579; and 18 segments of travel within 45 days for $749. A segment of travel is counted each time a passenger boards a train or Thruway bus. The USA Rail Passes are the same price all year round regardless of the time of travel. Travel must begin within 180 days of the date the pass is purchased. The USA Rail Pass is not a ticket. When using a USA Rail Pass, passengers must also have a ticket and reservation for each train they board and, as seats are limited, reservations should be made as far in advance as possible. The pass entitles passengers to travel in regular Coach class seats. On some trains, it is possible to upgrade a Coach seat to Business class or Sleeping car accommodations with payment of the appropriate surcharge.

As on many Amtrak trains, children aged 2 -15 years old ride for half price when accompanied by a full fare paying adult. Two children are permitted per adult fare. Children under 2 may ride for free with each fare paying adult. The USA Rail Pass is valid for travel on all Amtrak trains except Auto Train, Acela Express, Thruway motorcoach connection (7000-7999 series) and the Canadian portion of trains operated jointly by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada. Other restrictions apply.

International travelers who are outside of the United States can make a reservation by calling (001) 215-856-7953. If travelers are already in the U.S., call 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245) and ask to speak with an agent.
