Track Improvements Planned in Western Illinois

When the project is complete, crews will have removed and installed 47,000 ties, replace the rail in various curves, spread 46,000 tons of rock ballast to ensure a stable roadbed and replace the road surfaces at 33 crossings. Work began on this project March 18 and is scheduled to be completed by mid-April.

These improvements are part of the $1.6 billion Union Pacific is planning to spend in 2008 to maintain its track across its more than 32,300-mile system.
